Router

• Make sure the Ethernet ports support Gigabit speed, if not all of them at least one (to be used for connection to the network switch)
• Router will provide the NAT, which is a technology that allows you to run an internal network without it being exposed to the outside world
• You can get fancy on setting up the security features, but at very least:
• Change default admin user name
• Change default admin password
• Set the WiFi access point to be hidden, so people looking for access points don't even see it
• Router should support at least dual bands for WiFi ( 2.4 GHz band and the 5 GHz band).  However, I highly recommend a Tri-Band router (one 2.4 GHz band as well as TWO 5 GHz bands for optimal performance, speed, and bandwidth)

Network Switch

• Gigabit speed, all available ports
• Good capacity, in terms of available ports.  Probably at least a 16-ports, but if you can 24 better (so you don't run out later, you'll be connecting computers, laptops, network printer, maybe VOIP device like Vonage, etc.)

Ethernet Cabling

• Any cables being installed throughout the facility, make sure they are at least Cat 5e (needed for Gigabit speed)...but I'd do Cat 6, because they support more bandwidth
• For the WiFi extenders, you will probably need some additional cabling running into the greenhouse....or any other place that could be challenging, connectivity-wise

WiFi Extenders

• Most likely they use an Ethernet port, to connect into the switch...and they would then provide the WiFi connectivity
• Again, make sure they are dual band at least
• Ensure they have the most common / fastest connectivity types ( 802.11ac, 802.11n)

Miscellaneous

• Have a laser network printer, so people can print into it...as opposed to having multiple printers being used w/ each different computer
• Probably think about a NAS.  It gives you a shared network resource that you can use as a file server, without needing a computer configured as server.  Really handy for backing up files, or letting people access shared files over the network.  They also have some other features, like having an internal webserver that gives you shared resources like a calendar, notes, contacts manager, and a few other things (I have one at home, really useful)
• Get a scanner to have on-site, they are really useful at the business level (Maybe have an All-in-One network laser printer, so you also have a scanner & copier)

In terms of things somebody will need to help you with when site is ready:

Standard / Default Services

• Installation & configuration of network router

• Installation & configuration of network switch

• Installation & configuration of WiFi extenders (as applicable)

• Connecting computers to the network (Ethernet or WiFi), testing all connections

• Installation & configuration of network printer, connecting all computers to printer, and testing printing

Extra Services

• If desired, installing & configuring one of below resources:

  • A NAS device (for file server & data backup functionality)

  • A dedicated file server, using a workstation or server-grade machine

• Basic preventive maintenance of computers (downloading / installing Windows Updates, clean-up of junk / temp files, updating antivirus applications, running an antivirus check)
